Intelligent Affect: Rational Decision Making for Socially Aligned Agents

چکیده
Affect Control Theory (ACT) is a mathematical model that makes accurate predictions about human behaviour across a wide range of settings. The predictions, which are derived from statistics about human actions and identities in real and laboratory environments, are shared prescriptive and affective behaviours that are believed to lead to solutions to everyday cooperative problems. A generalisation of ACT, called BayesAct, allows the principles of ACT to be used for humaninteractive agents by combining a probabilistic version of the ACT dynamical model of affect with a utility function encoding external goals. Planning in BayesAct, which we address in this paper, then allows one to go beyond the affective prescription, and leads to the emergence of more complex interactions between “cognitive” and “affective” reasoning, such as deception leading to manipulation and altercasting. We use a continuous variant of a successful Monte-Carlo tree search planner (POMCP) that dynamically discretises the action and observation spaces while planning. We give demonstrations on two classic two-person social dilemmas.

Socially intelligent reasoning for autonomous agents
Socially intelligent agents are autonomous problem solvers that have to achieve their objectives by interacting with other similarly autonomous entities. A major concern, therefore, is with the design of the decision-making mechanism that such agents employ in order to determine which actions to take to achieve their goals. An attractive and much sought after property of this mechanism is that ...
متن کاملSocially Rational Agents . . .
Rationality relates to making the right decisions and producing successful behaviour. The notion of building rational agents is one of the main aims of research into artificial intelligence. The current predominant approach is to develop agents which follow a decision theoretic notion of rationality in which the agent maximizes the expected utility of its actions. Although this is intuitively a...

متن کاملCan a Rational Agent Afford to be Affectless? A Formal Approach
In this article, we expose some of the issues raised by the critics of the neoclassical approach to rational agent modeling and we propose a formal approach for the design of arti cial rational agents that includes some of the functions of emotions found in the human system. We suggest that emotions and rationality are closely linked in the human mind (and in the body, for that matter) and, the...
متن کاملRational Decision-Making In Resource-Bounded Agents1
The objective of this paper is to construct an implementable theory of rational decision-making for cognitive agents subject to realistic resource constraints. It is argued that decision-making should select actions indirectly by selecting plans that prescribe them. It is also argued that although expected values provide the tool for evaluating plans, plans cannot be compared straightforwardly ...
